The town of Zhlobin - the region´s center - is one of the most beautiful towns in Belarus, which stands on the bank of the River Dnepr. The town sprang up on the historical trade way from the Vikings to the Greek.

The archeological excavations show that Zhlobin as a settlement of the Drigovichi existed long before its first mentioning in 1492 under the name of Khlepen.

At the end of 19th century the territory of the present Zhlobin region made a part of the Lukovo volost /Rogachev yuezd/. The construction of the Libavo-Romenskaya /1873/ and Peterburgsko-Odesskaya railways promoted intensive development of the region. Zhlobin became a large railway center.

In 1919 Zhlobin became a volost center, on July 17, 1924 - a center of the Zhlobin region. July 3, 1925 it was granted the status of a town. In January 1938, in view of the new administrative division, the Zhlobin region was joined to Gomel oblast, since March 7, 1963 Zhlobin is an oblast town. It is situated 93 kilometers from Gomel and 215 kilometers from Minsk.
